A season five episode of Martin served as a backdoor pilot for a spinoff starring Tichina Arnold
Have you ever wondered what Pamela James's life was like outside of Martin's world? Sure, we saw her go head-to-head with the short guy who had no filter, we saw her style, that she could sing, and that she was Gina's bestie, but who really was Pam?
Fans of the '90s sitcom got to see more of her life in the final season. In the season five episode called "Goin' For Mine," Pam loses her advertising job and decides to go after a new opportunity at a record label. Martin, Tommy, and Cole only appear in the opening scene, where they visit Pam at her apartment before heading to a Super Fest and introduce her to Trey Foster (Dondré T. Whitfield), a high school friend who works as an A&R at Keep It Real Records.
Trey says he can help Pam get a job at the company, but he turns out to be all talk. He’s actually in trouble with his boss, Sweets (Phil Morris). There’s an A&R opening, so Pam agrees to help Trey with a music showcase if he helps her land the job. R&B singer Tyrese Gibson appears as Dante, and the regular cast includes Jenna von Oÿ as Donna the receptionist, Billy Gallo as Tony the creative director, and AJ Johnson as Clyde the mailroom guy.
In the end, Sweets realized Pam was the right fit for the label, so she got the job. If the show had been picked up, it would have had the same title as the episode, but that never happened. You can even find the theme song and opening on YouTube.
