Mo'Nique told Tami Roman that when she got her own show, she'd offer her a role. She kept her word.
We all know Tami Roman as a reality TV star, appearing on the Basketball Wives franchise as a no-nonsense baller's ex-wife who spoke her mind. She quickly became a fan favorite and expanded her brand from reality TV to hosting, television and film production, entrepreneurship, and more. While she's currently a main cast member on The Ms. Pat Show, acting was not new to her.
If you watch our classic '90s and '00s sitcoms on Dabl, you'll see her face a few times. One of those shows is The Parkers, and her story about getting the role is pretty cool and simple.
Roman and Mo'Nique took a few acting classes together back in the day, and Mo'Nique would speak stardom into existence. During Roman's Tami Tales, she said she told Mo'Nique not to forget about her. Mo'Nique said when the time came, she'd have a role for Tami. In 1999, she and Countess Vaughn starred on The Parkers, a spinoff of Brandy's Moesha.
It's not unusual for actors to break their word, but Mo'Nique made sure she didn't fall into "Fake Hollywood" category. In the episode "Love Is a Royal Pain," Roman plays Dina, a woman Nikki hires to set up Kim's boyfriend (Royal Jackson, played by Miguel A. Núñez Jr.) , who she thinks is still a cheater. He is Nikki's former high school classmate; Kim met him at Nikki's high school reunion when she went as her mom's plus-one.
Roman said this is why she'll always respect Mo'Nique: instead of acting like a big-headed superstar, she kept her word and gave her an opportunity. That's what we call a real one.
