What do Queen Latifah and Jamie Foxx have in common?
Black productions in the '90s and early '00s were top-tier. From sitcoms to drama, there wasn't a moment you couldn't turn on your TV and see a Black cast. As a result, many of our favorite actors and artists grew their careers during this surge of content. For example, although Queen Latifah and Jamie Foxx were artists before starring in shows and films, it was their '90s shows that solidified them as credible actors.
Living Single and The Jamie Foxx Show are sitcoms that must have a mandatory laugh factor in their scripts. In almost every scene in each show, something happens like a cue for audiences to laugh. Perhaps it's the live studio audiences/laugh tracks, or maybe the writers are just that hilarious.
Either way, they're staple shows in Black culture. As you can see, we show both right here on Dabl. Here's a fun fact about both of those stars, Latifah and Foxx: they're among a small number of R&B/ Hip Hop artists to receive an Academy Award nomination in an acting category.
That's right, the prestigious award that all actors dream of winning. Jamie Foxx actually won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Ray. Latifah earned her nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the musical film Chicago. Will Smith and Jennifer Hudson (Ali, Dreamgirls) are also R&B/Hip-Hop artists who've been nominated (and also won) an Academy Award.
